The fire at St. Johann im Pongau
A major fire struck the market town of St. Johann in Salzburg on 31 May 1855. The contemporary circular says that, during a violent storm, the fire spread within hours and destroyed 50 houses, the same number of agricultural buildings and the old church with its records. It estimated the loss at more than half a million guilders in Convention currency.[1]
A later official town history states that the fire began in Anton Sponnberger's workshop after boys playing with matches ignited wood shavings. That account is a later local reconstruction of the cause; the contemporary circular preserved here does not state it.[1, 2]
The administrative path of the collection
The surviving file records successive stages: a governorate decree of 2 July 1855, a Jihlava regional-office circular of 9 July, and transmission by the Neustadtl district office on 17 July. Local endorsements of 28 and 29 July assigned the collection, with a deadline of 10 August. On 14 August the municipality reported that no voluntary contributions had been obtained.[1]
A composite official record
This item is not a single letter written at one moment. It combines a copy of the general appeal, regional and district covering orders, postal and filing notes, a municipal instruction to collect donations and the final negative return. Preserving the dates and issuing bodies separately reveals how a charitable appeal moved through several levels of administration.[1]
Convention currency
The abbreviation C.M. denotes Conventionsmünze, or Convention currency. Under that standard one guilder was divided into 60 kreuzer, and the system remained in use until the currency reform of 1857. The estimated loss is left in its historical unit without conversion into present-day purchasing power.[1, 3]
Evidence and limits
The cause of the fire comes from a later municipal history and is kept distinct from the contemporary circular. The reported destruction, estimated loss and zero result of the collection are statements in the surviving official file; they are not supplemented with a modern monetary equivalent or an interpretation of why no donations were recorded.[1, 2, 3]
