Letter from Veuve Jacques Arnaud to Constant Paillard-Duclere seeking help with her son's military substitution, March 18, 1819

Veuve Jacques Arnaud asks deputy and ironmaster Constant Paillard-Duclere to intervene with the Minister of War so that her son Benjamin can obtain a military substitute and remain at home. J. J'ai recours à votre complaisance qui m'est
connue, pour vous prier de me rendre un service :
mon jeune fils B.me a été designé par le sort a faire partie
des jeunes soldats de 1817. j'avais en consequence arrêté
un remplaçant qui devait se trouver le 27 f.er d.er
au conseil de revision, pour le faire accepter. malheureu-
-sement cet homme m'a manqué de Parolle. je m'attendais
qu'auquel y aurait un nouveau conseil pour y en
présenter un autre. à la prefecture on vient de
dire à mon fils qu'il n'y en aurait plus, & qu'on ne
pourrait se faire remplacer qu'au Corps, & encore
difficilement. il a obcervé qu'ici on avait pas la
même facilité qu'à paris; car dernierement Le
Ministre de la guerre a donné avis que les jeunes gens
qui avaient eu l'intention de se faire remplacer
& qui n'avaient pu jusqu'alors avaient encore
un nouveau delai jusqu'au 12 ct qu'on a
annoncé les jours de Conseil de revision, mais sans
dire & designer le dernier, passé lequel on ne
pourrait plus se faire remplacer. il avait donc
lieu d'en esperer un nouveau, surtout d'après
l'avis du Ministre. ils se trouvent plusieurs
personnes dans le même cas.
Je vous serais donc infiniment obligée de
solliciter auprès du Ministre l'obtenir que mon
fils Benjamin arnaud, designé sous le no 30. (4eme Canton
de nantes de la Classe de 1817) soit autorisé a faire accepter

I have recourse to your kindness, which is known to me, to beg you to do me a service:
my young son Benjamin was designated by lot to be part of the young soldiers of 1817. I had consequently engaged a substitute who was to be present on the 27th of February last at the revision council, to have him accepted. Unfortunately this man broke his word to me. I expected that there would be a new council to present another one. At the prefecture they have just told my son that there would be no more, & that one could only get a substitute at the Corps, & even then with difficulty. He observed that here we did not have the same facility as in Paris; for recently the Minister of War gave notice that the young men who had had the intention of getting a substitute & who had not been able to until then still had a new delay until the 12th inst. that they announced the days of the revision council, but without saying & designating the last one, past which one could no longer get a substitute. He therefore had reason to hope for a new one, especially after the Minister's notice. There are several persons in the same case.
I would therefore be infinitely obliged to you to solicit from the Minister to obtain that my son Benjamin Arnaud, designated under no. 30 (4th Canton of Nantes of the Class of 1817), be authorised to have his substitute accepted at the Corps of the legion of the Loire-Inférieure in Nantes, & that he be granted the faculty & the necessary time to find a substitute in case of refusal of the first.

veuve qu'il lui est indispensable. en mettant
tout l'empressement que je vous connais, vous
pourrez me rendre un service signale! excusez-moi
de toutes les peines que je vais vous causer

P. S. a l'instant je viens de voir un maire de nos Environs. qui m'a
bien qu'il y avait eu un avis Ministerielle pour accorder un nouveau
delay aux Jeunes Gens. Mais qu'on ne leur avait pas fait connaitre
je suis faché que notre prefet n'ait pas sollicité du ministre un
dernier Conseil de Revision annoncé Expressement. si cela avait eu lieu
mon fils et plusieurs autres ne se trouveraient pas dans le même cas.
mais j'espere que par votre Entremise, on accordera un nouveau delay.
et qu'on donnera les mêmes facilités pour les Remplaçants. il est Bon
de vous observer qu'on n'a pas sollicités des temps auprès du conseil
et que l'a boi dit qu'on pourra en accorder sur l'advenance du

As they told my son that on the 23rd inst. he would be incorporated, I beg you to do your utmost so that the Minister authorises him to stay at my home until he has provided a man in his place. Please expose that he is a widow's son, that he is indispensable to her. By putting all the eagerness that I know you have, you will be able to render me a signal service! Excuse me for all the trouble I am going to cause you.

P.S. Just now I have just seen a mayor of our surroundings, who told me indeed that there had been a Ministerial notice to grant a new delay to the young men. But that they had not been made aware of it. I am sorry that our prefect did not solicit from the minister a last revision council expressly announced. If that had taken place, my son and several others would not find themselves in the same case. But I hope that through your intermediation, a new delay will be granted, and that the same facilities will be given for the substitutes. It is good to observe to you that they did not request extensions of time from the council and that the law says that one can be granted upon the arrival of the young soldier. [illegible]
