Brescia Most Esteemed Godfather

Salò, 29 December 1859

I make it my duty to wish you a good new year
and the remainder happy, begging you with this letter of mine
if there were the means to have some work given to
my husband, having the factory in order, in case you should hear of
some Merchant who has work done, I beg you to bring
me to his attention, for he will remain satisfied with the work. Believe me, Signor
godfather, that my heart weeps at not being able to satisfy
you, but understand that since fifty-five our
new factory is completely finished and is in operation
except for very small things. For me it is one of the most
anguishing pains, I have to work day and night with my daughters to support my
children
until providence opens some road for me
and the boys are of an age to earn, for which I am
begging with this letter of mine your pity to forgive
my debt, for which the reward in Heaven will be all the greater for you,
at least you will have eternal good by
relieving an unfortunate family that prays much for you.
It is indeed true that I am in possession of various houses but
these are burdened with mortgages so that one can never manage
to fulfill the interests and the judicial expenses and bought
in our town trade is gone. I hope that the Lord
will want to listen to my weak prayers and put an end
to my misfortunes. Forgive me, which I ask of you from my heart,
and with esteem I sign myself Angela Cosi

[Left margin]
I beg your goodness to have the enclosure given to whom
it is addressed, for which I will be grateful, and if I am of any worth, do not
spare me, both in work and for anything in the town.
