Messieurs Otard Dupuy & Ce a Cognac

J'ai bien reçu vos deux lettres des 24 & 27 mars
et qui renfermaient facture a 25 futailles de vos eaux de vie
depuis la cloture de notre marché ne m'a pas
engagé a vous faire passer de nouveaux ordres, le cours
de vos de votre marque ayant été mal tenue, offertes
tres l'homme a l'encan et vendues de f110 a 120 Omin.
Cependant pour l'exprimer la recette nouvelle une
fois bonne je ne puis je vais me de charger a mon
extreme par le retour du Brig Caucasian Cap Sprague
que j'expedierai le 4 ou le 5 Octobre pour Bordeaux 25 Demi
pipes de vos eaux de vie ou vous rembourserez pour
leur montant Chez Messieurs C. Baralon & Cie a Bordeaux
en votre traite a trois jours de vue qui vous reviendra de
l'arrivée du navire, j'espere une police ouverte pour
les assurances je vais disposer du Don de faire comme
pour les eaux de vie que vous chargez a mon adresse,
Cependant les marchandises d'apres telles polices ne peuvent
etre assurées que du moment ou le connaissement
a bord constate le chargement a bord du navire et
vous courez a courir ces risques de Cognac a Bordeaux,
j'ai cependant passe a votre credit les f.87-50c
pour les assurances a votre dernier envoi que
vous pouvez ajouter a la facture de mon ordre
d'aujourd'hui, je vous prierai egalement de faire
charger les 25 futailles sous la marque VB et de les
assortir comme suit 20-Demi pipes 4me preuve couleur
ordinaire aux eaux de vie de cette maison et 5 Demi pipes
3mes preuves vielles de 2 a 3 ans couleur moins foncée,
pour les prix j'en entendrai que vous ferez au mieux

New York Sept 30 1841

Messrs Otard Dupuy & Co. in Cognac

I have well received your two letters of March 24 & 27 which contained the invoice for 25 casks of your brandies. Since the closing of our market has not encouraged me to send you new orders, the price of your brand having been poorly maintained, offered to the highest bidder at auction and sold from f110 to 120 Omin. However, to express the new recipe once it is good, I cannot, I am going to take it upon myself to my extreme by the return of the Brig Caucasian, Capt. Sprague, that I will ship on October 4 or 5 for Bordeaux 25 Demi-pipes of your brandies, or you will be reimbursed for their amount at Messrs C. Barralon & son in Bordeaux
in your draft at three days' sight which will be returned to you upon the ship's arrival. I hope for an open policy for the insurance. I will arrange for the Don to do as for the brandies that you are shipping to my address. However, goods under such policies cannot be insured until the moment the bill of lading on board confirms the loading on board the ship, and you run these risks from Cognac to Bordeaux. I have, however, passed to your credit f.87-50c for the insurance on your last shipment, which you can add to the invoice for my order of today. I will also ask you to have the 25 casks loaded under the VB mark and to assort them as follows: 20 Demi-pipes 4th proof, ordinary color for the brandies of this house, and 5 Demi-pipes 3rd proof, old, 2 to 3 years, less dark color. For the prices, I will understand that you will do your best.
