Letter from Jopp & Co to Otard Dupuy & Co concerning Trinidad brandy shipments, breakage and competition, 1876-01-27

Richard Finlayson, signing per procuration for Jopp & Co, reports on expected shipments of bottled and cask brandy to Trinidad, discusses breakage in flasks, weak demand for the remaining stock and competition from lower-priced cognac houses. The address-side docket appears to contain a separate Tintagnac & Co attribution, whose exact relationship remains unresolved.

Dear Sirs,
I am in receipt of your valued favor of 5th
Current and carefully note contents.
Your shipment of 150 Cases Quarts 25 Flasks
and 25 1/2 Flasks shall have my attention on
arrival, next mail will doubtless bring me shipping
documents. The 1/2 Flasks are very saleable. I have
hitherto abstained from recommending your shipping this
size as I feared the breakage would be increased. The
proportion of breakage in the Flasks has always been
large but I trust your future shipments will be
more fortunate. Gautier Frères & [another competitor's name unclear],
still continue to ship largely and monopolize a
large portion of the trade. their low price is a great
inducement to purchasers. Having still a portion
of your last shipment on hand I am prevented sending
order but hope to do so very shortly.
Your shipment of 75cs Brandy in Wood shall
have my careful attention on arrival and will I
trust meet a good market.
asking reference to Enclosed current for other
particulars.
I am dear Sirs
Yours faithfully
Richd Finlayson
