Messieurs,
C'est me

Gentlemen,
Rouen, August 18, 1840
The departure of M. Castel, my representative, for
a health trip, which unfortunately he
needs, puts me in possession of the
representation of all his Houses. This is to say
you have been advised of the trust that he
had granted me, to manage his affairs during
his absence. Having no reasons to
converse with you, Gentlemen, since this departure
and having moreover received none of your news
I do not know if he really advised you as
in any case, I will claim for my part in the
interim the goodwill & my share of the
trust with which you had invested him.
Thus, Gentlemen, for the first act of my management
I will ask you if you would not have to offer to
M. Castel 5 or 6 quarter-casks of new Cognac brandy.
In my travels I saw this Client, he
showed me a keen dissatisfaction with this oversight which
forced him to place an order with another house.
I do not suppose that this oversight was voluntary.
M. Castel [you?] well 6/4 of Cognac, until now
he has always satisfied his commitments honorably
given my information, I believe there is no reason to
doubt his solvency at least for such
a small amount.
Please then honor me with a response while treating

retour. Si autrement, dites le moi encore
parceque malgré ma conviction, je me tiendrai
Loyer

this matter thoroughly. If it is the result of an
oversight, tell me so as well, because in that case, M.
Castel, I will deal with it personally upon his
return. If otherwise, tell me still
because despite my conviction, I will hold myself
in reserve with him.
I therefore await your response for the prices of
new & old brandies & in addition to
those to be delivered for the next ship.
I have the honor of greeting you very affectionately
Loyer
