triste nouvelle.

My dear uncle,

My father is better—steadily better. The night was good and his sleep peaceful. During the morning he took four spoonfuls of broth at two-hour intervals and tolerated them well. The doctor, on leaving us at noon, told me that he was convalescing.

I have just told him that I was going to write to you. He asked me to point out that, from a letter by the doctor, he had noticed that you had begun working on your account books. He recommends that you use a raised desk so that you can write upright, and never work after meals, when the stomach is more constrained and compressed.

I have not written to you since [the news concerning Éléonore]. She has been dead since the 17th of this month; I had not yet brought myself to give you this sad news.

Has Louis left for Algiers? I think he will come here to take the steamer; we shall have the pleasure of embracing him. This destination must distress your aunt.

Has François sent you any news? Please give [Mr Perret?]'s family news of him.

Farewell, my dear uncle. I am here with my sister; we embrace you.

Eugène Frachon
