Ma Très chère mère
Je vien de recevoir ta lettre du 4 nov. je ne sais si c'est vous qui vous
trompez quant il m'avait semblé voir que la place que vincent à eu
en état dans un mison de francfort qui travaile avec sarsouti
et la pologne. S'il en est ainsy qui vous le dites, je pens- bien de meme
que vous, j'ai eu de la peine que vous avez aussi souffert de l'inondation
tu ne pourras te faire un idée du ravages que le Rhone à fait ici
et dans les environ, plus de 40 maisons ont été renversées par l'eau tant
dans [illegible] qu'à la guilliotière on n'entend parler que d'homme noyés
et de familles ruinées, mais tout ça est peut de chose à coté du mal
que fait maintenant la Sâone toute la partie de la ville qui est
au dessous de la place de la fromagerie jus qu'au confluent de
la sâone et du rhone est inondée de forts courans d'eau qui descendent
se jetter dans le rhone tout le long du quai on est oblegé d'aller
en bateau dans toute cette partie de la ville sur le quai st.
antoine l'eau à penetré dans le premier étage des maisons quatre
ponts entre autre le pont Seguin a été emportés en vitese et à serin
on ne compte pas les maisons qui ont été demolies mais les maisons
qui restent de bout pour comble de malheur le feu y à pris la
nuit passée et à brulé jusques au nivaeu de l'eau une superbe mison
ce soir seulement on dit que l'eau commense à diminuez continue
à me donnez souvent des nouvelles de mon pére, je vous aie en pleurer
je vous embrasse

English translation

My Very dear mother
I have just received your letter of November 4. I don't know if it is you who are
mistaken, as it had seemed to me to see that the place that Vincent has had
was in a house in Frankfurt that works with Sarsouti
and Poland. If it is thus that you say it, I think well the same
as you, I was pained that you also suffered from the flood
you couldn't have an idea of the ravages that the Rhone has caused here
and in the surroundings, more than 40 houses were overturned by the water as much
in [illegible] as in La Guillotière one hears only of drowned men
and ruined families, but all that is little compared to the harm
that the Saône is doing now the whole part of the city which is
below the Place de la Fromagerie down to the confluence of
the Saône and the Rhone is flooded by strong currents of water that go down
to throw themselves into the Rhone all along the quay one is obliged to go
by boat in all this part of the city on the Quai St.
Antoine the water penetrated into the first floor of the houses four
bridges among others the Seguin bridge were washed away in speed and in Serin
one does not count the houses which were demolished but the houses
which remain standing to top it all off the fire took hold there the
past night and burned down to the water level a superb house
only this evening they say that the water begins to decrease continue
to give me often news of my father, I have cried about it
