Ma bonne petite soeur

J'écrivis à mon père il y a qq. jours et je pense
que vous aurez reçu cette lettre.
Je pense que vous continuez à bien vous porter
pour moi je me porte Supérieurement
Je croirais manquer à l'amitié que je te dois
en laissant passer cette époque sans t'embrasser,
te souhaiter une bonne année et Surtout une
bonne Santé, et en même temps te charger
d'être mon interprêtte auprès de nos bons parents
que je te prie de bien embrasser.
Je te Souhaite de bonnes étrennes, pour moi
j'ai reçu les miennes ce matin. Comme je l'esperais
je viens d'être nommé Sergent fourrier dans la même
compagnie où je me trouve actuellement, aussi
suis je bien content.
Je te prie ma chere soeur de bien vouloir
m'excuser si je ne t'écris pas plus longuement, mais
Je suis obligé de travailler et n'aie point de temps à
moi une autre fois nous nous dedomagerons.
Adieu embrasse bien le père et la mère
comme je t'embrasse moi même, et rappelle toi
que tu dois nous remplacer auprès de nos parents

Saumur, December 29, 1839

My good little sister

I wrote to my father a few days ago and I think that you will have received this letter. I think that you continue to be well; as for me, I am supremely well. I would think I was failing in the friendship I owe you by letting this time pass without kissing you, wishing you a happy new year and especially good health, and at the same time tasking you to be my interpreter with our good parents whom I pray you to kiss well. I wish you good New Year's gifts; as for me, I received mine this morning. As I hoped, I have just been appointed quartermaster sergeant in the same company where I currently am, so am I very happy. I pray you, my dear sister, to please excuse me if I do not write to you at greater length, but I am obliged to work and have no time to myself; another time we will make up for it. Farewell, kiss father and mother well as I kiss you myself, and remember that you must replace us with our parents. Farewell I kiss you again. My regards to the whole family and to everyone.
