Mon cher jean marie
je suis revenu samedi soir de seynouret, avec ma femme
le temps a été constamment froid et pluvieux, cependant
on a pû recotter des foins, et il y en à beaucoup,
les blés sont bons ; [la phrase suivante sur une récolte est peu claire].
nous avons eu 1277 livres encore ; à Seynouret il y avoit
beaucoup de [mot peu clair] ; s'ils eussent donné autant de poids
que dans les autres domaines, nous aurions eu plus
de 150 quintaux. je crois t'avoir dit que je les avois vendus 42 f.
La crainte de manquer de feuille m'en avoit fait
acheter [passage partiellement illisible] une vingtaine de quintaux ;
elle a été tout de suite [passage illisible] trouvée à
la vendre au même prix qu'elle avoit coûté ici.
c'est sans doute mon absence qui ma privé
d'avoir de ses nouvelles, je te prie, mon cher
ami, de m'en donner, et me tarde de savoir
que vous allés tous bien et que nos beaux
frere et leur famille, ont pûs retourner
a la campagne.
ni nous continuons d'aller bien et vous
embrassons tous d'affection

les vignes ici et dans tous les environs ont prodigieusement
coulé ; nous n'avons pas été épargnés à Olivet, mais c'est
surtout à l'Hermitage qu'il y a le plus de mal. Avez-
vous du mal à Annonay ? On attribue la coulure au
brouillard qu'il y eut il y a une quinzaine de jours, et à
l'extrême vigueur des vignes.

Tournon, June 30, 1840.

My dear Jean-Marie,
I returned Saturday evening from Seynouret with my wife; the weather has been constantly cold and rainy; nevertheless, we were able to harvest hay, and there is a lot of it. The wheat is good; [the next crop phrase is unclear]. We obtained another 1,277 livres. At Seynouret there were many [word unclear]; if they had yielded as much weight as on the other estates, we would have had more than 150 quintals. I believe I told you that I had sold them for 42 francs. Fear of running out of mulberry leaves had caused me to buy [part of the passage is unclear] about twenty quintals; they were sold at the same price they had cost here.
It is undoubtedly my absence that deprived me of getting news from you; I beg you, my dear friend, to give me some, and I long to know that you are all well and that our brother-in-law and their family have been able to return to the countryside.
We continue to do well and embrace you all affectionately.

The vines here and throughout the surrounding area have suffered severe coulure (failure of fruit set). We were not spared at Olivet, but the worst damage is at L'Hermitage. Have you suffered damage at Annonay? The coulure is attributed to the fog about a fortnight ago and to the extreme vigour of the vines.
