Je t'ai appris aujourd'hui par une lettre de François [...] qu'il a été nommé caporal le 25 du courant. Il paraît bien content, et surtout de la manière dont a été réglée sa promotion. [Passage partiellement illisible concernant la promotion et l'intervention du chef de bataillon.] [...] lui a fait espérer qu'il serait prochainement nommé fourrier.

François me donne ces détails par sa lettre du 28. Voici son adresse:
Caporal au 30e de ligne, 1er bataillon, 2e compagnie, caserne et rue de l'Oursine à Paris.

English translation

Tournon, 31 December 1838

Today I informed you, from a letter by François, [...] that he was appointed corporal on the 25th of this month. He appears very pleased, especially with the way his promotion was decided. [A passage about the promotion and the battalion commander's intervention is partly illegible.] [...] led him to hope that he would soon be appointed company quartermaster.

François gives me these details in his letter of the 28th. Here is his address:
Corporal, 30th Line Regiment, 1st Battalion, 2nd Company, barracks in the rue de l'Oursine, Paris.
