C'est avec douleur, mon cher Jean Marie, que je viens t'annoncer la mort d'Auguste Bruyère. Bien que nous y fussions préparés depuis longtemps, nous n'en sommes pas moins bien affligés. Il s'est éteint à huit heures du soir, sans souffrance, ayant toute sa connaissance et après s'être occupé d'affaires dans la journée.

Le matin, il avait signé l'acte de vente, terminé la veille à minuit, de l'office et de toutes les propriétés de son père. M. Bruyère aîné [passage bref indistinct] au prix de 110 000 francs, dont 10 000 payables le 1er mai, puis le surplus à des époques fixées, sauf la part des mineurs, qui restera entre les mains de l'acquéreur jusqu'à leur majorité et ratification de leur part de la vente; c'est à quoi les frères majeurs se sont engagés.

It is with sorrow, my dear Jean Marie, that I tell you of the death of Auguste Bruyère. Although we had long been prepared for it, we are no less deeply afflicted. He died at eight in the evening without suffering, fully conscious and after attending to business during the day.

That morning he had signed the deed of sale, completed at midnight the previous night, for the office and all his father's properties. Mr Bruyère the elder [a short passage is indistinct] at the price of 110,000 francs, of which 10,000 are payable on 1 May and the remainder at fixed dates, except for the minors' share, which will remain in the purchaser's hands until they come of age and ratify their portion of the sale; the adult brothers have undertaken this obligation.

J'étais hier auprès d'eux jusqu'à six heures; ma femme et Isabelle [y restèrent] jusqu'à onze. Elles y sont allées ce matin et y sont encore. Mon fils arriva hier soir peu d'instants avant la mort.

M. Bruyère va vendre son office [titre exact indistinct] et aller habiter Annonay. Dis à mon neveu Etienne que les minutes de mon père, qui étaient chez Bruyère, doivent lui être remises; j'y veillerai.

J'ai des nouvelles de Vincent; il va mieux.
