Mon cher père

Je m'empresse de t'écrire pour t'annoncer une bonne
nouvelle qui j'en suis bien sur, vous fera autant de plaisir
qu'elle m'en fait. Je suis passé sergent major à dater de
dimanche de ce mois à la 4 Compagnie du 1er Bataillon
de nouvelle formation qui s'organise dans ce moment à
fontevrault près Saumur, en remplacement de la même
Compagnie que dont je faisais partie il y a un an
et demi. tu ne saurais te figurer combien je suis content
de cette promotion, aussi comme tu le vois je m'empresse de t'
écrire, J'espère que cette nouvelle te fera plaisir et
te prouvera que je suis bon à quelque chose, et à ne pas
te désespérer sur mon sort que je vois tout en rose.
Je pars, probablement d'ici, dimanche prochain et
serai à fontevrault du 18 au 20 au plus tard, tu me feras
plaisir de m'y écrire

Sergeant Major of the 30th Line Regiment, 1st Battalion 4th Company
at Fontevrault, Maine-et-Loire

My dear father,

I hasten to write to you to announce some good
news which, I am very sure, will give you as much pleasure
as it gives me. I have been promoted to sergeant major, dating from
Sunday of this month, in the 4th Company of the 1st Battalion
of new formation which is organizing at this moment in
Fontevrault near Saumur, replacing the same
Company that I was part of a year
and a half ago. You cannot imagine how happy I am
with this promotion, so as you can see I am hastening to
write to you. I hope that this news will give you pleasure and
will prove to you that I am good for something, and not to
despair over my fate which I see completely in pink [rosy].
I am leaving, probably from here, next Sunday and
will be in Fontevrault from the 18th to the 20th at the latest, you will give me
pleasure to write to me there.
Farewell, I only have time to kiss you
