mon cher ami

Le courier d'aujourd'hui m'a apporté la lettre
du 21. j'ai Eprouvé un vif plaisir en apprenant
que vous jouissiez tous d'une bonne santé.
je te remercie de tous les détails que tu me
donnes. et de l'invitation que tu nous fais. 
de vous aller voir. nous y répondrons.
mon cher ami en famille. car tous les
miens se font une fete. de vous aller
visiter ces vacances. je la partage en
mon particulier cette fete. je pourrois
même ajouter, que pour moi, c'est un
besoin. il me seroit vraiment pénible
de ne pas passer quelques jours avec
vous tous, pendant ces vacances. a
mon age; il ya bien loin de 1839
aux vacances de 1840. il faut donc
jouir du present ; ne pouvant rien me
promettre de l'avenir.

My dear friend,

Today's mail brought me the letter of the 21st. I felt great pleasure in learning that you are all enjoying good health. I thank you for all the details you give me, and for the invitation you make us to go and see you. We will respond to it, my dear friend, as a family. Because all my family are making it a celebration to go and visit you these holidays. I share this celebration in particular. I could even add that for me, it is a need. It would be truly painful for me not to spend a few days with you all during these holidays. At my age, it is very far from 1839 to the holidays of 1840. One must therefore enjoy the present; not being able to promise myself anything for the future.

I approve the balance you have made of our current account up to this day.

ses condisciples avant leur Examens.

que de s'assembler s'il en est besoin.

Tell our friend Charles that I am as sensitive as can be to all you have told us on his behalf, and that we will have great pleasure in receiving his son. Nothing opposes him taking a lodging at my house; that will put no obstacle to the meetings he proposes to have with his fellow students before their exams. They will be able to meet at my house. That will even be more convenient for them than assembling, if there is need, in an inn. Assure him also that I will see the professors of law; when I am informed of the day he must take his exam. These professors are not always the same. Experience has taught me that in such a case, one must only make recommendations to them the very day or the eve of the exam they are administering. I also add that I will be able to lodge at my house Charles's fellow students if they do not want to separate during their stay in Annonay, and if that is agreeable to them; I shall be pleased to [verb indistinct] the people of Annonay to them. I often pride myself on presenting myself as belonging to this town.

We suffer like you from the drought. What is bizarre is that with great heat, we experience at intervals very cool days. One could even say cold mornings.
