Mon cher père.
Il y a bien longtems que je vous ays ecrit et je
n'ose presque le faire, n'ayant point d'excuse à donner pour
ce retard. mais j'espère que pour cette fois tu voudras bien me
pardonner cette négligence. j'ai bien recu ta dernière lettre avec
une reconnaissance de 15 francs dont je te remercie. j'y vois avec peine
que ta santé tarde à s'ammelliorer, tandis que je me flattais
que tu allais de mieux en mieux de jour en jour, mais voici le beau tems
et il faut espérer que tu te remettras. je pense que ma mère
et ma bonne petite sœur se portent toujours bien, moi j'
ai une bonne petite santé et me portant toujours bien, mais je
voudrais que Babet pensa à moi et voulut bien se donner
la peine de m'écrire. elle sait bien que cela me ferait plaisir
et j'espère bien qu'elle ne manquera pas de me satisfaire à moins
que ses occupations ne soient trop majeures. j'ai appris avec
plaisir que la santé de mon oncle continuait à s'ammelliorer
Je pense que maintenant il va bien et que ses promenades au
tilleul lui faisaient du bien.
Depuis mon arrivée je n'ai pas reçu de lettre de Charles
est-ce que par hazard il négligerait aussi de vous écrire, il m'avait
pourtant bien promis de le faire, il sait que je m'interesse
à savoir ce qu'il fait et s'il est toujours content dans sa
maison ; s'il a une augmentation, si ses embarras de conscription
sont terminés et enfin sa nouvelle adresse, car tu m'as dit
dans une de tes lettres qu'un de ses patrons se retirait

Versailles, June 7, 1838
My dear father.
It has been a very long time since I have written to you and I almost dare not do it, having no excuse to give for this delay. But I hope that for this time you will be willing to forgive me this negligence. I received your last letter well with a receipt for 15 francs for which I thank you. I see in it with sorrow that your health is slow to improve, whereas I flattered myself that you were getting better and better day by day, but here is the good weather and it must be hoped that you will recover. I think that my mother and my good little sister are still doing well, as for me I have good little health and am always doing well, but I would like Babet to think of me and be willing to take the trouble to write to me. She knows very well that it would give me pleasure and I hope very well that she will not fail to satisfy me unless her occupations are too great. I learned with pleasure that my uncle's health continued to improve. I think that now he is doing well and that his walks to the linden tree did him good.
Since my arrival I have not received a letter from Charles; could it be that by chance he would also neglect to write to you? He had however promised me to do so, he knows that I am interested in knowing what he is doing and if he is still happy in his house; if he got a raise, if his conscription troubles are over and finally his new address, because you told me in one of your letters that one of his bosses was retiring.

Après il est aussi vrai que dans une position
comme la mienne on a besoin que quelqu'un nous montre
de l'amitié et nous prévienne car il est doux de s'entendre dire
une parole d'amitié et de pouvoir sortir un instant de cette vie
d'égoisme et sauvagerie que l'on a dans l'état militaire. ce
n'est pas que j'en sois mécontent, loin de là, mais au contraire
j'en suis très content, et je serais bien difficile si je ne l'étais
pas, tout le monde est plein pour moi de complaisance et
de bonté à commencer par mon commandant jusqu'au dernier
soldat. Je ne fais aucune corvée je suis couché à part je me suis
mis à l'école à travailler ce que je ne sais pas le directeur de l'école
se fait un plaisir de me l'apprendre et de m'être utile autant
qu'il est en son pouvoir. Nous devons ces jours ci lever des
plans militaire ensemble et les faire passer à la revue du général
inspecteur qui a lieu au mois de juillet.
On a fait au commencement du mois le tableau d'avancement
par compagnie j'y ai été porté en tête pour fourrier, et avec de
bonnes notes du commandant et de mon capitaine, et j'espère que l'on
en fera je pourrais peut être passé mais je ne sais encor quand à
ce beau mois je te reponds que le temps me dure.
J'oubliais de remercier ma mère du bout de lettre qu'elle
avait bien voulu joindre à la tienne, elle me fait bien
plaisir toutes les fois qu'elle veut bien le faire. J'ai vu il y a
dix jours madame Pourret qui m'a dit bien des choses pour elle.
j'ai été fâché de ne pas avoir été prévenu du départ de mr
Davenas, et de savoir qu'il passait à Annonay qu'après son arrivée.
j'aurais profité de son départ pour vous y faire envoyer ma montre
qui m'embarrasse et que j'ai peur qu'on me vole, si par hazard
je partais avant d'avoir vu quelqu'un de chés nous je pense que
je pourrais la remettre à Madame pourret qui pourrait peut être
la faire parvenir par une occasion.

Besides it is also true that in a position like mine one needs someone to show us friendship and anticipate our needs, because it is sweet to hear a word of friendship and to be able to escape for a moment from this life of selfishness and savagery that one has in the military state. It is not that I am dissatisfied with it, far from it, but on the contrary I am very happy with it, and I would be very difficult if I were not; everyone is full of complaisance and kindness for me, starting with my commander down to the last soldier. I do not do any chores, I sleep separately, I put myself in school to study what I do not know; the director of the school is happy to teach it to me and to be useful to me as much as it is in his power. We are supposed to survey some military plans together these days and pass them for the review of the inspector general which takes place in the month of July.
At the beginning of the month the promotion table was made by company, I was placed at the head for quartermaster, and with good marks from the commander and my captain, and I hope that if some are made I might perhaps be promoted but I do not yet know when for this beautiful month, I guarantee you that time drags for me.
I was forgetting to thank my mother for the short note she had kindly added to yours, it gives me great pleasure every time she is willing to do it. Ten days ago I saw Madame Pourret who told me many things for her. I was sorry not to have been warned of Mr. Davenas's departure, and to know that he was stopping by Annonay only after his arrival. I would have taken advantage of his departure to have my watch sent there to you, which is a burden to me and which I am afraid will be stolen from me; if by chance I were to leave before having seen someone from back home, I think that I could give it to Madame Pourret who could perhaps have it forwarded by an opportunity.

Il y a tellement longtems qu'on dit que nous partons
de Versailles pour nous rapprocher, que je n'y crois plus, et
pourtant cette fois il parait qu'il y a beaucoup de probabilité que
nous partons dans le courant du mois pour St Denis. Mais lorsque
tu m'écriras écris moi toujours ici jusqu'a ce que je t'ai donné
la nouvelle adresse.
j'ai eu assez peur que nos vignes auraient beaucoup souffert
et qu'il n'y avait qu'une mauvaise apparence de recolte il
faut espérer qu'elle sera meilleure qu'on ne s'y attend, ou du moins
que celle de l'année passée viendra bien récompenser le manque
de celle-ci. je ne sais pas si à Annonay il fait le même
tems qu'ici, mais nous n'avons pas encor eu de chaleurs
continuelles. il y a presque toujours du mauvais temps
j'ai vu dimanche une course de cheveaux on

It has been so long since they have been saying that we are leaving Versailles to get closer, that I no longer believe it, and yet this time it seems that there is a lot of probability that we are leaving during the course of the month for St Denis. I was quite afraid that our vines would have suffered a lot and that there was only a bad appearance for the harvest; it must be hoped that it will be better than expected, or at least that the one from last year will come to well compensate for the lack of this one. I do not know if in Annonay the weather is the same as here, but we have not yet had continuous heat. There is almost always bad weather.
I saw a horse race on Sunday, we are supposed to see another one on Sunday.
