My [poor condition?] is the true reason why I did not reply sooner to your favour dated the 8th of this month. Things are now a little better. I am advised to take the mineral and thermal waters of plan De phaisis, below Montdauphin. I am leaving at once. This journey, and the deterioration of my health which has obliged me to neglect collecting some funds, oblige me to return the draft you drew on me for the balance of 119 francs. I shall have this paid to you in Grenoble during the coming September. Believe me, if I had had cash, I would have had it for you. It is certainly not in order to turn to anyone else — please understand that — that I have decided not to bring in another bottle of liqueur without first having entirely sold those I have here, since I have had to pay the consumption duty for the year under the subscription arrangement, and as I continue
