Notes

Appuntato is retained as the manuscript’s payment-instrument term, with its precise form unresolved. The short wording before montoni unti is genuinely uncertain; the readable goods and immediate shipment clause are preserved. Bazzanoni remains the trade term.
The source signature writes Vignol; the reverse commercial stamp identifies the firm as GIUSEPPE VIGNOLI.

Forlì, 23 May 1861.
Your welcome letter of yesterday records the proper credit to me of £23.20 for the goat skins sent. I have reason to think they pleased you; I should also have appreciated your telling me so. While I prepare the others promised to you, I shall be much obliged if you give me, for the aforesaid sum, your appuntato for Bologna, due at the end of this month, as I need considerable funds for that market today. As for greased sheepskins and bazzanoni, [illegible]; indeed, I am going at this very moment to send them to another friend in your market. I give you this information and, confident of being favoured with your friendship, greet you respectfully.
For the firm Vignoli.
