English translation

Dear Mr Samuele Finzi
Ferrara — Senigallia, 28 July 1852.
At this moment I have received your welcome reply dated 25 July, in which I understood the reduced price of £16.50 per hundred Ferrarese weight. For my weight it must be increased by 4 percent, as you tell me. At that price and weight I therefore accept your sale. By the end of the week I shall await receipt of four bales of leather [illegible], with a weight of 114 to 125 pounds for each hide, payment at the end of next January in actual Roman metallic currency. I shall give your precise order to Coloni, whom you mentioned. With my customary esteem, I greet you sincerely.
Gasparo Bolognesi.
P.S. Send me the invoice and a regular bill of exchange together with them, so that I may accept it.

Notes

The revised reply draft is kept separately, including legible cancellations. Physical tears and heavily overwritten words leave genuine gaps.
The incoming weight is per Cuojo (each hide), not per bale. The quantity is four bales. The reply changes the consular consignment to six bales, assigning Nos.36 and37 elsewhere and38–41 to this recipient.
The draft notation un/6 and the ensuing maturity notation remain unexplained; no fraction or month is supplied. Norchio is a tentative source name. Dal Ponte and Salomon Calafi are retained as source names without external identification.

English translation

In reply to your welcome letter of the 28th of this month, you did well not to delay at all [cancelled: delay], approving my offer of four bales of leather of my manufacture, at [inserted: illegible] the price of sixteen and a half Roman metallic scudi per [paper loss] hundred [inserted: Ancona; cancelled: illegible].
[Cancelled: reduced to Ancona weight] making one hundred and four of our Ferrarese pounds, placed [cancelled: in a boat] there through a correspondent [illegible; cancelled: illegible]. [Cancelled: illegible] next January [cancelled: illegible]. For that amount you have enclosed a bill of exchange [cancelled: signature], falling due [illegible] at the beginning of [illegible]. I shall be pleased [cancelled: illegible] to have it returned accepted with your prompt reply.
You also have enclosed the Consulate bill [paper loss], covering both the aforesaid four bales and the six [cancelled: illegible] shipped for Norchio[?] [cancelled: illegible] by [cancelled: Mr] the forwarding agent dal Ponte. You will hand over two of these [cancelled: illegible; inserted: namely Nos. 36 and 37] to [inserted: the aforesaid] Mr Salomon Calafi and partners, to whom I have committed two of your bales, including precisely [cancelled: illegible] Nos. 36 and 37. Consequently, you must receive Nos. 38, 39, 40 and 41, which you will also find at the foot [cancelled: illegible] of the invoice [cancelled: illegible], making up its aforesaid [illegible].
I would prefer you to be more moderate in your demands in future. I repeat what I told you in my preceding letter: if the goods had not been [illegible] in transit, I would not have sold them [paper loss], certainly at a [illegible] lower price to you than the one at which I have dealt with the leading merchants [paper loss], who distinguish not only my manufacture but also [cancelled: illegible] the sale of skins from our slaughterhouses from [illegible].
