Senigallia, 9 April 1852.
To obtain sincere and honest information, we turn to you as a religious person, confident that you will oblige us. Our community is considering appointing Mr Giuseppe Ancona, a native of your city, as chief rabbi. He currently serves as deputy rabbi and teacher in Lugo.
We wish to know precisely whether he can fulfil the office with which he would be invested: whether he is well versed in preaching and in resolving any religious doubt, and whether his moral qualities as a whole make him worthy of such an office. Please also give an accurate account of his social character, namely whether he is engaging in his manner, and of his physical appearance and health. You may count on our scrupulous confidentiality concerning this information.
Thanking you most warmly in advance, and awaiting your prompt reply and commands, we remain respectfully yours.
Affectionately yours, [illegible]
Levi and Camerini.

Notes
The right ends of several incoming lines are clipped at the fold. Raw text keeps the visible fragments Comu, caric, Pulpit, d and a; their unambiguous sense is rendered in English. Pulpito is fully legible on the inserted sheet and means preaching. The reply's stock comparison reads minore del Terzo del antecad Anno. The text does not safely distinguish a reduction by a third from a stock below a third of the previous year's amount; the English marks the proportion as unclear. The revised reply and inserted assessment are retained separately, with all surviving cancellations and additions. Neg.o after Amico is not expanded without proof. The final revised order clause remains partly unreadable. The word after un before che vi includo is not securely legible. Neither the earlier prodigio nor the proposed ragguaglio is established by the connected strokes; the English preserves the local gap.

I have delayed my reply to your welcome letter of the 9th of this month, because [cancelled: illegible] I had to rely on [inserted in the margin: religion; cancelled: illegible] [illegible; cancelled: illegible] concerning your religious enquiry, as well as the physical and moral particulars [cancelled: of the person; cancelled: illegible] of the person you seek. [Illegible; inserted: originals] your [illegible].
I enclose an [illegible], of which you will make such discreet and prudent use as you consider the writing and its writer deserve. The writer favoured me as [inserted: my] friend and [illegible].
As the time approaches for your usual leather for the fair, I take this opportunity [cancelled: only] to warn you that, compared with last year, my stock will be smaller [proportion unclear]. This is due both to the limited [cancelled: illegible] supplies from our butchers and to the excessive [cancelled: the; inserted: price] of hides. [Cancelled: illegible] not [illegible; cancelled: illegible; inserted: receive] in other markets [illegible; inserted: to fill the gap] [illegible] order some from you, etc.

[cancellato: illeggibile] Il Rabbino Ancona
perfetta Salute.

This physically inserted sheet contains an assessment in the recipient's draft hand. Its judgements are the writer's statements; no independent biographical claim is made. Native original-color details confirm Pulpito, qualsiasi and the complete health statement. The two heavily crossed phrases remain undeciphered.

English translation
[Cancelled: illegible] Rabbi Ancona cannot be said to rank among the last in preaching. He has sufficient knowledge for [cancelled: illegible] resolving any religious doubt. Nothing is known against his morals. His physical appearance is good rather than otherwise and, as far as I know, he has always enjoyed perfect health.
