Bologna, 1 May 1852.
Following your welcome letter of 25 April last, I have today sent nine sacks of ground valonia through the aforesaid Guerra. They were produced from the sixteen sacks in grain form that you sent me; you will collect them from the same person. Please credit me with £2.76 for grinding and porterage, as detailed below. Together with the £4.96 due to me for last year’s grinding, your debit is £7.72. Against this, you have a credit of £23.61 which you caused to be paid to me through Mr Pasquale Minardi on 16 February last.
I have spoken with our mutual friend Mr Filippo Lucelli, who sends you his regards, concerning his debt to the aforesaid firm. He told me that it amounts to £21.46–6, for your information.
I have been unable to learn anything concerning what you [paper loss] Cavalieri may have sold here or at Burgi, apart from what was made in his own factory. The price of hides here has been fixed for [paper loss] the year’s supply at 46 paoli per hundred; calfskins at 95 bajocchi each.
Awaiting your reply upon receipt of the valonia, and always ready to carry out your welcome orders, I remain respectfully yours,
Pietro Tironi, successor to the firm of Paolo Bernardi.

Notes

Physical tears remove words in the Cavalieri and hide-price clauses. The surviving words are translated without filling the losses.
The expense total reads 2:76 in both the body and account; the final digit is checked from native original-color strokes, not supplied by adding the expenses. Account weights are kept as written; lb is a weight unit, distinct from the £ currency glyph.
The opening uses a½ as an abbreviated expression for means of dispatch. The spelling Burgi is retained without identifying or normalizing the place.
