Bologna, 1 March 1856.
In reply to your welcome letter of last month, today I have sent you the two bales of horse leather in good condition through the carrier Vincenzo Guerra. You will be able to obtain them duly from him and then credit me with the net amount of £36:45, as itemized below.
The retail price of leather here holds at £21 to 22 per hundred, and the wholesale price at £19 to 19½ per hundred. There is now a lull, as there also seems to be in hides.
No tanner has yet fixed a definite price. As soon as one is fixed and [illegible], I shall notify you.
This is for your information. Always ready at your command, I respectfully greet you.

Notes

The upper panel is the recipient's reply draft, separately written from the delivery address.
The draft's cramped letter reference, shipment noun, entry abbreviation, son's qualifying phrase/name and postscript wording remain unresolved. The son requests assistance in finding a capable man to manage the tannery.
The date 1856 is legible in the incoming dateline, docket and postal year. The small holes do not establish a different year.
The two inserted phrases and the single cancelled word are retained. The final pen flourish is not an additional crossed-out sentence.
