Ferrara. Mr Samuel B. Finzi D. Magrini
Bologna, 27 May 1852
Yesterday I received your kind letter of the 21st of this month. The matter I had pending with the Health Commission has been resolved through the Consli, and it has emerged that Montalti, Padovani’s former partner, was responsible.
Montalti married off two daughters, who had lived as concubines with the late Padovani, to certain Salvatori: one married the father and the other the son. They have moved into a house opposite my factory. Every day Montalti comes to hold a gathering about what I do and do not do. He has had the two sons-in-law, father and son, submit an application to have my factory closed, so that his would be the only glue factory left in Bologna, hoping the tanners would entrust their garovella to him.
But here this man is all too well known for his misconduct, and he also harasses me over the sale of glue. I will say no more about this, because it troubles me too much.
I have promised Mr Cavalcioni and Mr Negri, and have made the same promise to you, that in due course I will settle the lots of garovella from Ferrara at a fair price that harms neither me nor you.
I send you my respectful greetings.

Notes
A small hole interrupts one word in the incoming letter. The reply sketch below the signature contains cancellations and insertions. The incoming letter reports the writer’s allegations about Montalti and the attempt to close his factory. Conventicolo denotes a gathering; the manuscript has the nonstandard Oprire and Facia/non Facio. The English connects the gathering with what the writer does and does not do, following the adjacent clause; the older reading Conceria (tannery) is not supported by these strokes. A hole removes the central letter of n…n; the Italian preserves the physical loss, while the English renders the evident negative sense. The lower reply draft contains cancellations and an interlinear insertion, which remain distinguished from the incoming letter. Garovella is retained as the documentary trade term. The letter connects it with tanners and glue manufacture but does not specify its exact material or processing stage. Consli and D. remain unexpanded.
