bien.

Voiron, 18 June 1839

Dear brother, you must not take things so to heart, Eugene causes us grief, but after all he is not our child. He has never had any affection for us, who have continually looked after him; let us do him as many favors as we can, but let us not grieve over his conduct and make ourselves sick over it. I hope that your indisposition will have no further consequences. The heat is unbearable; it is fine weather for the crops and for the silkworms. I hope that my sister will soon be relieved of her cares and that [the silkworms] will do well. Give my regards to François & give me news; I learned with pleasure of his arrival, I hope that he will recover promptly. Edouard went to Grenoble yesterday; [the beginning of a clause about seeing the president is illegible], but he saw the 1st deputy prosecutor and two judges who told him that Eugene's prodigality was not evident enough to have a court-appointed adviser assigned to him, that one will not obtain it in Grenoble. We must therefore give up on it. Eugene wrote from Marseille that he was going to Italy. To make this journey one certainly must have money, and no doubt he took in Grenoble some securities on Italy; we will not be able to find out from whom. In any case I am waiting, the drafts will surely arrive. If he were to draw on me, I warn you that I will not pay. Has his guardianship account been drawn up? What does he have left?
