Bologna, 12 March 1856.
In prompt reply to your welcome letter of the 10th of this month, received only today, I inform you that I accept your lot of fleshings at 2.30 lire per hundred, equivalent to the 24 Bavarian [currency units] you requested per Ferrara thousand [weight unit], loaded on the cart there, as you tell me, entirely at your expense, with payment in two months, provided that all the material is good and free of any foreign matter and that you allow me a five per cent allowance to reduce it to the weight used here—a very modest requirement in comparison with the considerable increase you make on the price of the goods. As I told you, the contract is understood to cover the fleshings of the whole year, and no other arrangement.
I also ask you not to disclose the exceptional price agreed above, lest it prejudice my other purchases.
I trust I shall receive confirmation that the matter is settled on those terms, since you thus also have the additional advantage of saving the carriage and the customary tare, and therefore

[Crossed-out heading: Bologna, Mr Emidio Montalti.]
Ferrara, 14 March 1856.
Since you did not accept my offer in your letter of the 12th [of this month?], [cancelled words], favourable as regards the price and contractual terms, I [am passing it] to others. I had told you that I would give you preference, indeed the advantage of allowing you two months' credit, whereas others pay me in cash. I have therefore disposed of my lot with others for this year. This is [by way of?] notice.
