I replied yesterday to your previous letters and today receive yours of the 7th.
I have no one sufficiently trustworthy whom I can use to send it to you. You would therefore, on the contrary, have to send it yourself; but all this together involves many risks and expenses.
It appears, moreover, that a fairly substantial quantity of paper payable in Paris, particularly at sight, has come into the [M.on?] administration. It follows that we shall have to hurry: exchange is rising and paper is becoming scarce. The operation therefore offers little profit at present.
Nevertheless, here is what could be done.
You have of mine, including the proceeds of 30,000 francs, approximately
90,000 francs [following word uncertain]
4,083.31 at sight on [Sarreguem.?].
If you bought 4,000 louis, you would send them to Camus at Châlons with the enclosure and ask him to make the return in the manner that would give us the greatest advantages and [convenience?].
For example, you would ask him for obligations due on 30 Ventôse, which I would then dispose of at the bank in payment of mine. This could only please him, since he

1.935
Il resteroit donc de gain — 1175 Net

would gain more than a commission through savings on transport costs.
Or he could remit paper of his choice payable in Paris, which we should need to be able to discount at the bank at one-half per cent, using the proceeds to buy long-dated obligations or for another good operation. Alternatively, the bank would have to agree to take it in payment of my obligations due on 30 Ventôse.
Camus would credit us with interest at seven-eighths per cent per month and find his profit in the one-half per cent commission of the [bearer?].
In this way you would save the expenses and risks from Châlons to Mainz, receiving the return from Châlons in whatever manner you consider best.
This would cost us one-quarter or at most one-third per cent on the 4,000 louis, as far as Châlons — 320
1 sol per louis — 200
one-quarter per cent loss of interest on funds [set aside?] — 240
Total — 760.
At present I would obtain 10x against the Brabants at the [rate?], which would make on the 4,000 louis — 1,455.
If this rate held and I were rich enough [margin: which I am very far from being] to [take a commitment from them? — wording uncertain], solely through exchanging the paper we could still gain one-half per cent after deduction of commission, brokerage and loss of interest until maturity/payment — 480
1,935
There would therefore remain a net profit of — 1,175.
Notes
The coin/rate notation is retained as 10x; its unit is not expanded. A short phrase in the conditional sentence remains uncertain. The written arithmetic is 320+200+240=760 and1455+480=1935, leaving1175.

[paraphe]
[en bas à gauche :]
Si le papier sur Paris baissoit
l'operation deviendroit bien
plus belle.

See, then, my friend, whether this can be done, whether I have made no mistake in my calculations, and whether you are sure of finding in the returns from advances the resources I suspect are there. Then consider whether the business can be carried out without fear of its becoming known and being branded as shady dealing. Its most pleasing aspect to me would certainly be to let you share in it.
But it could not often be repeated: first, because we could not always [cover?] the transport costs; and secondly because I should no longer have, as I now can through the presence of the troops on the right bank, the opportunity to send my gold across without violating customs laws and risking compromising myself.
Here, my dear friend, is my combination. Now do as you please and as you judge most suitable, and act for the best.
If you send me nothing, make whatever use you wish of the 4,083.31.
I embrace you with all my heart.
[paraph]
[lower-left postscript:]
If paper payable in Paris fell in price, the operation would become much more attractive.
Notes
The short transport-cost verb remains provisional.
