Mayence, le May 1807.

Mainz, May 1807.

[crossed out: The Receiver General of the Department of Mont-Tonnerre,]

[crossed out: To] I have received your letter of the 29th, my dear friend. You are in charge only of the accounting of the service cash office; that is quite different, and I offer you my very sincere congratulations. But here I am immediately making use of your kindness.
1. Here is a letter whose subject may perhaps cause some difficulty. Please come to an understanding about it with M. Joudan, and try to prevent my being made the dupe of M. Desrouzières; you will find his consideration concerning the 193 francs 58 centimes.
2. You must know that a circular from the Minister, No. 7, granted receivers fifteen days' advance credit for the remittances they would make to the Public Treasury in paper payable in Paris. In acknowledging receipt of this circular to the Minister, I expressed the wish that this favour [crossed out: of fifteen days' advance credit] be extended to receivers ordered to deposit their funds in the reserve cash offices, since, being deprived of the option of remitting to Paris in bills of exchange, it was not fair that they should also be deprived of the advantage attached to that option.
M. Joudan wrote to me on 8 January that the Minister had said that [this would not apply to me? — reading uncertain]: he agreed that my deposits in the reserve cash office should be credited ten days before their date, starting from 1 January, in consideration of the efforts I had made for the good of the service.
In thanking the Minister very much for this favour in my letter of 13 January 1807,

me paraissoit souverainement Injuste.

I requested that it be granted for all my deposits in the reserve cash office, starting from 1 November rather than 1 January. It was principally before 1 January that I had succeeded in obtaining favourable results through the care I took to supply the reserve cash office; moreover, fifteen days' advance credit had been granted generally for remittances payable in Paris since the service cash office was established.
I have received no reply to this letter. It also concerned another matter, [crossed out: that is] namely 82,000 francs in drafts from the Payeur Général due on 10 August, which I was expecting at maturity and which I learned were in the hands of the service cash office on 8 October. Yet they notified me of the debit with value as of 15 August, which seemed to me supremely unjust.
It appears that I have lost my case [‘par appoint’? — uncertain phrase], since the service cash office's statement of account does indeed enter the 82,000 francs to my debit as of 15 August.
But I would like to know whether a definite decision has been made on both matters in my letter of 13 January, and to know where I stand in that regard, having no intention

Notes

9bre denotes November; 8bre denotes October. The short phrase after ‘mon procès’ remains uncertain.

pourroient bien devenir mon affaire.

[paraphe]

otherwise to return to the subject or to make a further claim if it is a settled matter. I would merely ask you to speak of it amicably and confidentially to M. Joudan and tell me his reply frankly.
Forgive so much trouble, but I should like to know where things stand [wording uncertain]. If you have no time to write to me, tell Julien.
You tell me nothing about Drapier. I [know?] well that these difficulties could well become my concern.
You are quite wrong to feel embarrassed about your account, especially where money is concerned; you must be teasing me. As for the figures, I shall try one of these days to write to you about part of the work, sending a short extract from my books; you will only have to verify and correct it.
Farewell. I embrace you and am entirely yours.
[paraph]

Besides the money I hold in reserve, there is an enormous amount of money in Germany, to such an extent that La Bouillerie is also going to establish a reserve in Mainz and send an assistant receiver there. I would have liked it to be you yourself, but events will no doubt decide.
[paraph]

Notes

The damaged fold and insertion around Julien/Drapier leave a few local words uncertain.
