Mainz, 2 June [crossed out: illegible day in May] 1807.
[crossed out: The Receiver General of the Department of Mont-Tonnerre,]
To
I wanted to write to you at length, my good friend; [there is no?] leisure. I am about to get into the carriage to take my wife and daughter to Cassel. I had presumed [the outing?] and [thought I could?] make this short journey. Everything is secure during my absence, which will last only a few days.
I sell [our?] bills of exchange, and no other signature than mine is wanted. If, however, [illegible name or designation] were in a position to give one and you were spoken to about it, [write?] to him saying that I had apparently gone to Frankfurt.
I read your letters and the instructions concerning the new accounting of the service cash office with very real pleasure. I congratulate you warmly on this giant step.
I have worked like a madman. I had hoped to send you today the new bookkeeping system which I believe I should propose to Mr [illegible name] in place of the old one, which really cannot cope any longer. But this requires so much development that I have been unable to finish it. On my return I shall set to it immediately. My clerk will test the system during my absence, and on my return it will be my work.
Farewell, all in haste and entirely yours.
[paraph]
I am still making some arrangements concerning the funds; please do not deprive me of that facility. I no longer make them with the aim of feeding the small income.
Notes
Documentary annotation: 20 [ditto?] [separate notation below the dateline] The cancelled May day cannot be read confidently. A few words in the opening travel clause and the name or designation and verb in the signature paragraph remain uncertain.
