I cannot do better, my dear Broumer, than to send you the original of [Mathieu's?] letter. It will show you that he does not want the post which I had thought of requesting for him recently. He is right in more than one respect. I rely on your prudence and friendship [for him?]; act yourself, see my uncle Laumond, and, if he has not yet taken any steps, urge him not to do so, [crossed out: illegible] for I am told that there are frequent difficulties at the École des [Mines?], especially since the new project concerning teaching.
But if he could do something to get him into the guard, then urge him to work towards that.
I do regret, however, that the option of teaching does not seem suitable to him.
Entirely yours, and completely.

Notes
The name in the second line and a short abbreviation after ‘amitié’ remain uncertain. A fold obscures part of the school name.
