Mainz, 1 Nivôse, Year 14 [22 December 1805]

The Receiver General of the Department
of Mont-Tonnerre,

To Monsieur Broumer

I have received, my dear friend, your letter of the 24th and 27th of the month now ending. I take note, to your discharge, of the 75,000 francs in obligations which you deposited for my account in the Bank's three-key chest, and await the settlement from [Sarra?] in order to make the definitive entries for this deposit, for which I ask you to accept all my thanks. You have since received 11,700 francs, and I hope that despite your slight fears you will have collected them. Be that as it may, you will have put this matter perfectly in order for my [recourse?] in relation to Bettmann. You handle business so well that I am sending you these further bills:

fr. 3,600 } through [Kanker?], bill due 17 Nivôse

buy me obligations as well, or something better.
These securities are undoubtedly perfectly safe in the Bank's three-key chest. However, I wish you to send them to me in an insured packet, because they may serve me either in providing justification to inspectors or as a means of action to draw further funds from Frankfurt and repeat the operation. I am nevertheless in no great hurry for this dispatch. If you can exchange them for those of our neighbours, principally the Roer, or for those of Lyon or its neighbours, that will be good. Otherwise send them as they are; I shall keep them until spring and exchange them myself in Paris when I come to see you.
As the need is continually growing, Bernus in Frankfurt and this department cannot fail to supply many. Fortunately, I have made fairly considerable purchases of obligations through Schlumberger & Co., and there are still 100,000 francs to be sent to you at this time for this purpose. You have not given me the information about that firm which I had asked you for. But they have not served me as well as you: they never gave me any at 1 1/8 and very few at 1 1/4; it is true that they selected the departments for me each [time?]. But as for you, my friend, you act so nobly in this,

I should so much like to pay you commission, so that you might at least find some advantage in it, and I give you my word that I am very [well able?] to do so through this operation. Our monetary society generates much news about itself; for my part, as you know, I hardly concern myself with it.
Farewell, I embrace you with all my heart. [The greatest?] reliance continues to be placed on the continuation of peace. Our military men will indeed [come?] to something more serious with this one, but I believe that she will make efforts to avoid it. Augereau is arriving with his 15,000 men; it appears that he will hold them in observation here and in our surroundings. [Soult?] and Mathieu are still at Vienna; those troops were not [in a hurry?]. Entirely yours,

Reiset

Have you not collected for me 402.98 francs on Duval?
It would be a good speculation to bring écus from Paris if they are really at 2 percent, and to buy paper, for it is still at 72: that is a profit of more than 6 percent.
Here are the 34th and 35th bulletins, which give me information concerning Prussia. You doubtless already know of the [signature?], and you [will know?] that we are the best friends in the world.

Notes

A few compressed words in the military news and the final postscript remain uncertain. The postscript gives the paper quotation as 72 and describes a profit exceeding 6 percent.
