Mainz, 25 Frimaire, Year 14 [16 December 1805]

The Receiver General of the Department
of Mont-Tonnerre,

I am told that Lyon holds 130,000 francs in obligations on me [abbreviated notation: au d.o]. It follows that the Bank has allowed the terms to be dictated to it in this matter. Since it now holds only 74,000 belonging to me, if it has assigned everything, please withdraw whatever excess it may hold for me and deliver it immediately to Septfontaines, whom I have to pay for the remittances he has made to me.
I shall settle my account with the Bank on 1 January. On an approximate reckoning it balances, apart from your remittances, those which Sarreguem may have made to it, and the obligations it may hold on me.
I have read your Publiciste; it was very satisfactory. The preliminaries are signed; when this letter reaches you, you doubtless know this as well as I do. Prussia would, I believe, very much like to extricate itself from the game.
I embrace you with all my heart.

If you send us a few dozen oysters and good oranges by one of the next couriers, it would do no harm and would give my wife great pleasure.
