[struck through: Le Receveur-général du Département

Schlumberger. //

[struck through: The Receiver General of the Department
of Mont-Tonnerre,]

I hope, my friend, that you will have called on Rigaud, after [Jubainville?], to have taken against the securities I remitted to you on the 18th and 19th of the current month all that you needed for your month-end. I am counting on it. However, if you think you have been badly advised in this matter, I am sending you a credit on the Bank for 6,000, which you may use. Always deal with me frankly and without ceremony.
The Bank, moreover, gives me almost nothing; I am waiting impatiently for news. Peace cannot fail to be made on the Continent, but I think that for England one must not contemplate it. I have some money left [in my purse?]; you do not need a sum at Schlumberger's. //
