Mayence, le 6 frimaire14.

A

Mainz, 6 Frimaire, Year 14 [27 November 1805].
[struck through: The Receiver General of the Department
of Mont-Tonnerre,]
To
The Bank, my dear friend, holding no obligations on me falling due in Brumaire, I think you will have passed my securities to Schlumberger, at whose disposal I had placed them and who have made substantial remittances to me. I have decided to pay them for Catoire Duquenoy, [although?] I am not a guarantor. Nevertheless, this cannot fail to make a very bad impression for them. Please therefore obtain reliable information about them and tell me how far I can rely on their account.
Money becomes less abundant here every day, and I no longer receive bills on Paris, which inconveniences me greatly while I keep sending funds [following qualifier uncertain] to the army. What madness!
Here are the last three Frankfurt newspapers. They apparently contain nothing new about our Grande Armée, but at least they give you all the details of our enemy's retreat.
Entirely yours.
My wife continues to get better and better.
Notes
The brief lower-left postscript concerns the health of the writer’s wife. One connecting word in the guarantee clause and a qualifier concerning funds remain uncertain.
