Mainz, 18 Frimaire, Year 14 [9 December 1805].

Whatever you do is always well done. Thus today you will have received 42,000 francs at the Bank, but you do not tell me whether the Bank will accept paper at maturity or whether they absolutely require écus. Your answer to this, which I ask you to send by return of post, is important to me.
Between ourselves, you are a fool not to want my commission. In truth, I pay Schlumberger only one-third percent, but at least at that rate I would have the pleasure of obliging you. Even if it did not put your pot on the fire, I would at least have the pleasure of putting a leek or another vegetable of your choice into it. The devil, my friend, you will forbid me from entrusting you with any commission! Nevertheless, I have a money operation for you. Enclosed, then, are 15,000 francs on Desprez at ten days. Please use this to buy obligations for me to the best of my interests. I do not restrict you as to maturity. As for the departments, since you will have difficulty collecting on mine, send me those of a neighbour; the Roer in particular would suit me very well. I did not wish to draw on Desprez at shorter notice, but you will no doubt find a way to make use of

mon Mandat.

my draft.
I do not know that the C.S. is asking you for obligations, but I still prefer them in your hands to its own, unless it is willing to enter them in the current account, which I do not believe it will do.
I have 30,000 francs with [Sarreguem?] at present. I have a mind to ask them to pay these into the Bank for my account. What do you think? Is that better than remitting on him?
I do not yet know a word of the change concerning the Gros affair. Please give me some details about it. I do not much like seeing [Piclot?] rise within it; he is an intriguer who understands little of it and concerns himself only with himself.
There is some belief in peace here. They are not yet entirely easy about the A. d'Empire. Here, moreover, is the German gazette—no, on second thought, here it is not: it would tell you nothing new.
I have not yet received the pretty drawing, but during her illness my wife received the pretty trifle. It is even better than the others. I thank you a thousand times for it, as much as I am indebted to you for mine.
This good little wife would be well but for this wretched weather, which

has given her a cold and makes her feel some rheumatic pains again. I hope that this will finally come to an end. My little daughter is wonderfully well and is always delightful; I should very much like you to see her one day.
Louis is, they say, under the care of a convent of nuns in Vienna; is he not well placed there? Mathieu is also in Vienna. [Rangouin?] is at Graz.
I embrace you with all my heart.

An officer who has just arrived from Vienna says that there is indeed much talk of peace there, that they are expecting [unresolved word]. The army fully expects to measure itself against the Russians once again; despite all their efforts, they will not be able to hold out against our troops.

Notes

One word at the end of the second postscript line is unresolved; it is not supplied from the following sentence. The surname before Gratz is tentative.
