Mainz, 23 Frimaire, Year 14 [14 December 1805].

I have received your letter of the 19th of the current month and credit you, by debiting the Bank, with the 41,000 that you remitted to it for my account.
You do not tell me whether it will receive remittances drawn on Paris at the end of the month.
I decide to write to Dauvergne, asking him to pay it the balance of my account. I hope he will manage to have it accepted.
The Minister’s circular is indeed very objectionable to us, but I do not know whether one should have much confidence in the Company. These gentlemen do not seem particularly clever to me; I have in no way bound myself to them or taken any interest in their operations, which are carried on provisionally only for the account and under the guarantee of the Treasury. We must see what its definitive organization will be.
I shall have the Publiciste fetched.
What can I tell you about Prussia? Nothing is as ambiguous as its whole conduct. Up to now it seems to me that it has deceived everybody. While congratulating ourselves that it has not yet declared against us, we find its conduct towards Austria infamous. Meanwhile it is advancing its troops into Westphalia. It was already being said these

environ de francfort, mais on m'écrit hier de ffort: on

amie Mad.e Cabey[?]

days that the King himself was at Friedberg, about twelve leagues from Frankfurt; but yesterday I received a letter from Frankfurt assuring me that the Prussian troops have just received orders to halt wherever they are.
No doubt our brilliant, though bloody, victory of 2 December and, above all, the peace between the three Emperors which is said to have followed it will have put fear into him.
The fact is that when Bonaparte is spoken to about Prussia, he smiles. The fact is that I believe the divisions of Augereau and Ney, which are falling back behind the Grand Army, are intended to blockade [Hameln?] and capture the Anglo-Russians, in spite of and notwithstanding Sweden, unless this is being done by agreement.
Farewell, my friend. You would do better to organize your cash office so as to be able to return a few Bank notes; everybody is crying out against you.
My family and I embrace you with all our hearts.
[paraph]

Please see that the enclosure reaches our friend Mme Cabey[?].
