English translation

Mainz, 19 Frimaire, year 14.

Here, my dear friend, are 10,000 francs drawn on [Gointon?], to be paid in on the 26th of the current month. If you can have it accepted at the Bank and believe that it will not receive bills falling due on that date, then [leave it at that?]; otherwise, buy bonds for me on the best terms [deleted: interests?].
The change in Desprez’s duties puts him in the position of having to leave immediately for Frankfurt.
I have only time to embrace you and am entirely yours.
[paraph]

The portrait of Bonaparte by Mr Recuard has just arrived. It is delightful; accept my thanks and charge it to my account.
[paraph]

Notes

The drawee’s name and a short phrase in the payment instructions remain uncertain. The wording immediately before Bonaparte is also uncertain; no identification of the sitter beyond the written surname is supplied.
