Mainz, 20 Frimaire 1806[?].
The Receiver General of the Department
of Mont-Tonnerre,
To Monsieur Broumer.

I have received, my dear friend, your letters of the 14th and 15th last, together with the insured packet containing:
70,000 francs on Ardèche, due 30 [November?], Year 14;
25,000 on Côtes-du-Nord, due 20 Messidor.
95,000 in all, for which I credit you, in conformity with your statement, with 89,159.90 francs. Deducting this sum from:
[calculation in the right margin]
48,062.84 } bills
11,913.57 }
30,000 on the [uncertain word]
89,976.41
leaves a balance on the current account of 816.51 to my credit.
S.C.89,976.41.
On the other hand, I [credit/debit—reading uncertain] you for having received a protested bill for 1,004.13 francs. In this connection I am a little surprised that Mr Perregaux did not intervene for the Julien signature, who appeared to be in need.
For the rest, I thank you a thousand times for this remittance.
I see, my friend, that you are no longer very eager to conduct your gold transaction, for which I have no great love. The louis are falling; I am charged with collecting these two million at Frankfurt. Give me a word and a plan in consequence. In the meantime [uncertain connecting words] letter; farewell [uncertain word].
[Entirely yours?]

Notes

Documentary annotation: 28Frimaire [separate notation below the dateline]
The pale dateline appears to give1806 while using the Republican month Frimaire; the year remains uncertain and no exact Gregorian date is assigned.
The verb recording the protested bill is uncertain between credit and debit; no direction of that entry is asserted. A small table label and words in the closing greeting remain uncertain.
