27 July 1807.
You wrote to me, my dear Broumer, on 21 March:
"I have subscribed Matthieu to the two newspapers, but only [uncertain notation:f.June?] and the Empire; I receive them only quarterly."
There is an error, my dear friend, either on your part or on that of the journalists. Matthieu has not received the Moniteur since 1 July, but I receive the Journal de l’Empire. Please renew his Moniteur subscription from [uncertain word].
Here are my brother, his wife, [Mr?] Godefroy and the merry party, back from Cassel, where they had the most delightful excursion. The utmost secrecy was kept. They began with the first [performance?] of the travelling actors, and you can imagine the mutual pleasure caused by their [chance?] recognitions.
So this beautiful country has now been definitively given away! Monsieur Jérôme has not received the worst share. Reubell junior is already there as governor of Wilhelmshöhe. The taking of possession is to occur by 1 [October?] at the latest. Matthieu and his wife are to [uncertain short insertion] come back to us. The Emperor only passed through here—what triumphs everywhere along his route! What a monument for history, this act of caprice.
Mr Mallet is passing through here at present and, since he is staying a few days for [rest?] [uncertain word] and Cassel, I have renewed my request to him concerning Matthieu. He asked me for another statement of his services; I prepared it for him, and he

prouve uniquement qu'on ne veut point avoir tort;

expressly promised to hand it to his brother as soon as he arrives in Paris. I therefore hope the matter settled.
Could you not, my friend, one day ask the Minister in private conversation whether my branch of service must continue much longer, whether he does not think that I shall be relieved of it when the army returns, and roughly when he thinks that might happen? It is not a motive of personal interest that makes me ask this, but a desire at last to make the journey to Paris this autumn. I should like to know whether I may [base?] my hope on doing so.
I received a letter from Mr Didier this morning, but it is no answer. Had you written, you would have answered these objections. This letter proves only that the other side will not admit it is wrong. I shall reply only to say that I shall obey, but I shall prepare an explanation for you, because I insist on having you as my judge.
Farewell; I embrace you with all my heart.
