The Receiver General of the Department of Mont-Tonnerre [printed title struck out].
To
Your advice, my dear friend, concerning the Duquénoy bills was sufficiently definite to determine my refusal, even if it meant leaving the service entrusted to me here unfulfilled, and [uncertain word] in the greatest calm. But your answer concerning Desprez still embarrasses me [short uncertain connection]; my intention is still to [uncertain verb]. I shall no more expose myself to risking 90,000 francs than to risking 500,000. Let us therefore explain ourselves more clearly, please.
If he is owed 20 million and himself owes 26, he is six million behind; that does not inspire confidence in him.
If you have good reasons for believing that I can make arrangements with him up to a certain sum, by what guarantee do you limit it?
I should wish [uncertain noun] from the Service Cash Office: in the hypothetical case that, in view of the guarantee of recourse it might have against what the Treasury [owed?] Desprez, and the advantage the Service Cash Office would derive from ending otherwise than by [seeing?] Desprez obtain funds from the Receivers, it would consent to take the guarantee upon itself.
But if that cannot be done, and one can nevertheless draw on Desprez with full confidence, then the [commissioning?] banker will transfer his

bills to the firms he names at Frankfurt at the Frankfurt exchange rate, which is always very favourable, without involving the Service Cash Office in any way. Thus the question is whether one can still proceed with Desprez, and how far.
But send me at once, if possible, an account of the [assistance?] supplied. As for that concerning the [uncertain qualifier] portion on your remittances, I await a letter which I have still [uncertain verb] for the day.
No further commission can be granted to me on these collections of bills for the Reserve Cash Office beyond the one-eighth granted for the whole. I certainly expected that. Yet if, instead of the one-half per cent commission allowed by the first circular for all collections, I was granted only one-eighth for the trouble and care involved in collecting bills, since I have always made savings to do it, that did not even seem inappropriate to me. This is all the more so because the one-eighth allowed to me on the whole applies both to the drafts and to the Duquénoy bills. Although you say I am the best treated of the Receivers General, all the others nevertheless have one-third per cent on their collections for the Service, whereas

in my case, because of what is withheld from me for the reserve portion, I have no commission except that same one-eighth on drafts. Yet I retain the funds and bear the responsibility for [uncertain duration qualifier] a long time, without any other remuneration. And since all the receipts have now become—since the Reserve Cash Office’s receipts are now only simple payments in—could they not be brought a little closer to the one-third granted to all the others on their receipts?
I shall not ask them for this, and I shall not reply further about the commission on drafts either; but you have here what you need if it is necessary to say something on the matter.
You know that I always [require?] you to speak to me with complete frankness; and count on [finding?] complete discretion in me.
You did well not to hand over my letter concerning the Spanish louis. But is it my fault if [Ariège?] and [Cantal?] are foolish enough not to protest vigorously against an injustice whose fate I would share in their [uncertain word], with even more [bitterness?]?
I shall [explain?] the matter of the 60 piastres through the aide-de-camp of [uncertain name].
Your boots have not yet been sent. Perhaps tomorrow I shall find an opportunity to [uncertain verb concerning the boots], against [uncertain word], [uncertain name] while going tomorrow to the Duke [uncertain name].
Farewell, entirely yours. I am always [uncertain word] for [signature or paraph].

Ariège/Cantal are tentative literal readings; short words in the injustice sentence and the closing personal errands remain uncertain.
