Letter concerning a recommendation for an army surgeon

Original transcript

24 Juin 1807.

Letter concerning a recommendation for an army surgeon

English translation

24 June 1807.

I took advantage, Monsieur Broumer, of the kindness shown to me by Marshal Lefebvre to ask him for a recommendation for Mathieu. Upon my word, I carried it by storm, for [one uncertain word] [Wiedekind?] is the Marshal’s physician and hardly ever leaves him, although the latter seems to me inclined to wish him infinitely well. He writes to Minister Dejean that, on learning, on his arrival in Mainz, of the death of [Despeau?], he takes the liberty of asking him for this position for Mathieu, who has been chief physician of the army corps and whose knowledge he has had the opportunity to assess in that capacity. Here is the letter. I would have sent it directly in the first place if I had known his address properly. Please hand it to him, telling him to deliver it himself if he can, or at least to have it placed personally in Minister Dejean’s hands.
We were told that Doctor [Mongas?] had not accepted. That would seem quite probable, since he does not arrive. If Mathieu were appointed all the same, subject to not summoning him until the peace; or, at least, provided that Marshal Lefebvre is answered that the position is reserved and assured to him.
Good day, my friend. It is a very long time since I received news from you. I embrace you with all my heart.
