Mainz, 1 August 1807.

My dear friend,
Martellier has been appointed an officer of the Legion of Honour by the decree of Königsberg of 11 July. I am delighted, and you surely are too; but that is not all. You must undertake to send us, by the very next courier, two officers’ crosses, one of the large pattern and the other of the second pattern, well made, together with twelve ribbons with ready-made rosettes.
Add a [second?] small fancy cross, in the current fashion and of the second pattern. I [a few words uncertain]; there are inexpensive ones. That will be my gift.
Martellier says to me: ask Broumer to take charge of this commission; he has done that [a few words uncertain] perfectly.
I hope he will take scarcely more than a month or six weeks to return to us. His wife returns in fifteen days and mine in eight.
Desprez opens five credits for me, each of 50,000 francs, on the firms [one word uncertain]:
Augᵗᵉ [Ferreaux?],
B. L. Fould,
Paul Prévost,
L. J. [Gohier?],
Marseille, Robiou & Co.
In a second letter he revokes the small ones on the last-named firm,

because, he says, although it is of [the same?] soundness, it is not of the first rank. He has then obtained for me a credit of 48,000 francs on the Spanish general, Mr de Romana.
First, I shall honour his credit because I [took back?] the overdue drafts. Desprez has always treated me well, and besides, this must rest on some kind of value.
Next, I may indeed make further use of a credit of 50,000 francs. I shall decide according to your first letter. I shall not draw myself, nor remit to the Service Cash Office; instead I shall have bills drawn and placed at Frankfurt. I shall choose B. L. Fould and Paul Prévost. I believe that [this use?] is the best among the five. Tell me what reputation is enjoyed particularly by Augᵗᵉ [Ferreaux?] and L. J. [Gohier?].
That, I think, is all that I shall do with him for the present, because [if?] he recovers well, he is a man [two words uncertain].
Farewell, my good friend; I embrace you with all my heart.
[flourish]

Is Paris quite content?
I hear, they say, of some changes already in the [offices?]?
