Mainz, 14 January 1807.

If I have not replied sooner, my dear friend, it is not that I have failed duly to receive your pretty consignment. Everything was charming and gave the greatest pleasure. My little [deleted: daughter?], for her part, thanks you for your pretty bouquet of violets. I have doubtless come a little late, but to prevent this happening again I subscribe to receive every year a little box of your making and choice, and [a few uncertain words] the ten francs [illegible]. So take it as said, and accept them. The last box arrived opportunely for Twelfth Night. Wise Godefroy, ever gallant, had made the surprise of sending [uncertain words] presents also coming from [uncertain words] Hamburg; [a few words illegible]. For my part [a few words illegible] to have served my people so well, thanks to your kindness.

Our little newspapers proclaimed over-magnificent victories too soon. It is disagreeable to have to tone them down, and that is what happens: here is Rapp wounded again. Altogether, the actions seem to have been fierce. I imagine that the Emperor will not waste his time in his winter quarters. He has his Kingdom of Poland to organise, but I do not see much hope before there have been a few more

vigorous blows dealt in the spring. Meanwhile the Empress is thoroughly bored and grows impatient at the uncertainty in which she is being left. But I believe more in a journey to Berlin than in one to Paris.

Thank you again for the box of oranges. I had guessed that they came from you, and they are welcome; only very poor ones can be found here.

The two duplicates of bills for 10,000 and 5,000 francs which you enclosed with your last letter have not [a few words uncertain] been delivered to me. They must have been slipped by mistake into one of your own letters: I have been looking for them everywhere for [two?] months. I received the fifty [notes?] from Roguin, but I do not know to which [illegible]. Would you kindly send me a small statement of account as of 1 January?

I am still amid my millions and [shall receive?] not a single écu yet. The accounts multiply, and the [adjustments?] grow more and more difficult.

Yours with all my heart.
[flourish]

Mme [Noa?] has been delivered of a stillborn child. Her health is suffering from it; I hope, nevertheless, that she will soon recover.
[Rousseau?] does not reply [yet?]. I am impatiently awaiting the registers I asked him for concerning finance.

I embrace you.
[flourish]
