Please, my dear friend, subscribe Matthieu to the Moniteur and the Journal des Débats for three months from 1 March, at the following address:
Mr Matthieu, Inspector of Reviews, Intendant [physical loss], of Hesse, at Cassel in Hesse.
Yesterday I accompanied his wife to Frankfurt, from where she [physical loss], with [a few words uncertain]. Send me a [a few words uncertain] in [one word uncertain]. The bankers at Frankfurt, how [a few words uncertain], to make an offer for gold; yet I know that at this moment. It is still one of the [uncertain] places where I do the most business.
We lost many men in the last action. Augereau’s corps is said to be reduced to nearly 4,000 men who will be absorbed into the other corps. Augereau himself is also suffering greatly, even more from his rheumatism than from his wounds.
If Desprez is so firmly in the saddle, how is it that his paper is negotiated only at ten to twelve per cent, while all the others go at four or five?
Good day; I embrace you with all [my heart?].
[flourish]
[Addition beneath the final sentence]
Today I have nineteen million in [portfolio?]; there are only you and the Public Treasury whom I pay [one word deleted].
16 March 1807.
[Despeau?], physician at the military hospital here, is very ill; I think he is dying. One must not let [Mafau?] miss this, and there would not be a moment to lose if one had in advance [sent someone?] to [one word uncertain] or to the current Minister, as well as to you. You should [deleted word] carefully obtain your information in advance, to know whom to approach in Paris at the ministry, and work energetically and at the right moment. Nothing would suit him better than this position.
I asked [Gontard?] how they did business when returning [paper] to the Bank. [Baudrant?] says that they found almost no advantage in it and that it was almost for the Government that they carried out this transaction. Consequently I [send?] you the [thousand Rᵗ?] [one word uncertain], and I shall supply the 11,000 francs by a small [uncertain word], [to which?] the [statements?] of the holders of the Service Cash Office [a few words uncertain], since it is they who [one word uncertain] the expenses at [the franc?] for this transaction. Entirely yours.
[flourish]
Do the business dealings of the [English?] [take place more?] at [one word uncertain]?
