victime.

Mainz, 24 September 1807

I thank you, my good friend, for your letter of the 20th. You will have seen from mine of yesterday that I was satisfied with the event which [we know of?] and which was causing you so much anxiety. You know how much I resisted at first and how, in the end, I yielded to entreaties, but above all to the favourable opinion of Desprez’s position that everyone, like you, gave me, and also, I confess, to the personal friendship he had shown me at all times, which did not allow me to suppose that he would deceive me and choose me, in a manner of speaking, as his victim.

Here is a confession.
I paid his draft of about 50,000 francs to the Marquis de Romano, commander-in-chief of the Spanish troops, who, incidentally, was almost on his knees when seeking payment, so much did he need it. To reimburse myself, I had 50,000 francs drawn on Paul Reiset on 4 August at two months. Here is the letter in which he informs me of his acceptance. I hoped this was a settled matter; you shared [our mistake?] [apparently?], for another of these drafts, said to have been sent immediately, [deferred?] on 5 August (15,500 francs), was refused, as you have seen. I am sending

[paraphe]

the [memoranda?; manuscript abbreviation “memoi.”], ditto, and 50,000 francs by the assignment which he duly received, and I had these 50,000 francs drawn on B. L. Fould, whose replies you have seen.

Desprez, for his part, [deleted word] informed me [the connecting words are uncertain] of a deposit with Fould, by letter of 10 September. This [invited me?] to repeat this operation, which I had nevertheless resolved not to do before payment of his first drafts.

Here is a letter for Desprez: unfold it, ask my brother-in-law to accompany you, and tell me by the [very?] next post whether there is reason to hope that I shall be covered. I have a good mind to do the same for Godefroy, but [wait for him to reply to you?] so that you can reach an understanding together.

Wholly yours, I embrace you with all my heart.
[paraph]
