Thank you, my very good friend, for always keeping me informed. I have received your letter of the 25th and that of the 26th.
You are quite right about the small coin. I am waiting for Gontard's proposal for 500,000 francs. As I [short connection uncertain] your [uncertain word] to the [uncertain word] paymaster at Berlin, I am forwarding them to you. But I shall indeed try to avoid undertaking this commission personally, for he really inspires [uncertain word] a great deal of disgust.
I shall settle your interest account, since you absolutely insist; but count on only 5 percent, which is the rate I have always had at Frankfurt, at all times. And I say again, I do not wish to treat you worse than business people treat you.
You speak to me of the appointment of [uncertain name], but I know nothing about it. Where do you get this news, and what authority is there for it?
The protest has not arrived, and I cannot understand Fould's silence towards me. Of the 50,000 francs, 42,000 were sent back to the Bank, which writes to me on the 22nd and says nothing about the bills. How, then, could acceptance have been refused on the 19th? I cannot understand it.
The bills which I endorsed [short connection and name uncertain]

Payable by Desprez on 26 June to Mr [Despré?], who had bought property at Mainz.
If only a means could be found of obtaining payment without my having to take action personally.
Could you not also find a means of including in the first distribution of funds the Desprez bills negotiated by the Gontards on their own account? There are about 120,000 francs, all sent to the Bank, which exchanges them. Their [efforts?] deserve particular consideration, especially the Gontards, who have at all times [cancelled word] assisted the service with the greatest eagerness and taken the Desprez bills because the Bank has always received them very favourably. In the end, it is good to treat them considerately because one may need them again.
Farewell; I have time only [for an embrace?], and commend [elliptical wording] to you.
