Mainz, 25 September [1807]
No, that is true, my good friend: your news of the 21st is not consoling. It is incredible that people persist in ruining, so lightheartedly, a man from whom great services may still be expected, and whose fall may bring down many worthy people and certainly harm public credit far more than all the ostentatious display of abundance can benefit it.
I nevertheless hope that everything will not have to be lost. Can Fould not be compelled to pay on the basis of his letter promising acceptance? I also hope that D. will give me some proof of his personal friendship on this occasion. If I had to take my place among the competing creditors, could one not [be?] under another name? I put myself in your hands.
I see that I am still not sufficiently armoured in iron. This is a harsh lesson; it could have been less severe. Perhaps six months' work have been lost, and it will have to be begun again at fresh expense. Well, my friend, I shall profit from the lesson. In what follows, how could one expect to receive funds from someone whom you [last words of this sentence uncertain]? Farewell; I shall be less rich, much happier, but I shall be no less your good friend for life.
