part pour me faire rembourser.

I have received your letter of the 23rd, my good friend. I thank you very much for the details it contains. They are valuable, and you may be quite certain that I shall make no use of them.
Let us now speak of my own affair. Here is a letter from D. which makes B. L. Fould’s conduct inexplicable to me. He is an f. f. if he does not accept my drafts, or at least return the bills which D. sent him to provide cover for the drafts.
Here is one letter for Fould and another for Duprez. I hope they will enable you to claim these bills. If they are not all paid, I must nevertheless believe that a large part of them are, and that will be so much saved from the shipwreck.
Make whatever use of these letters you wish. I am quite sure that you will spare no step to have me reimbursed.
But besides this I have taken 12,000 francs of these Duprez notes, on which I believe I still owe 2,000, leaving 10,000 francs.
[Interlinear addition: I myself [bearing?] the [endorsements?] for nearly 120,000 francs.]
How can one believe that the government will be so unjust,

so hostile to its own credit, as not to provide for payment of its notes?
The last time there was [a suspension?] of payments, provision was made for payment of all the [Vanlerbergh?] bills. This was what had given credit to those remitted by Desprez. The Gontards [a short clause is uncertain] [deleted word] [a few words are uncertain] absolutely [to serve Desprez?], because he [short word uncertain], an honest man, [was always assuring them?] that he would grant every facility; their advice from Paris told them the same thing, and the Bank was taking these bills [the form of bills is locally uncertain]. Finally, they have some which have fallen due [two words uncertain], sent to the Bank [on the 21st?], and [a short clause uncertain] protested; [transfer?] [a short expression uncertain] about them. They [would have taken?] others as late as the 24th. [A few words uncertain] the Desprez bills in their Bank account, the notes remitted to Cologne having been entered to Desprez’s debit at maturity by his correspondents.
It is certain that, unless provision is made for payment of these notes, Strasbourg, which is overflowing with them, is ruined;

The Receiver-General of the Department of Mont-Tonnerre.
To Monsieur B. L. Fould in Paris.
Sir,
I was fully reassured by your letter of the 17th of this month, which announced that my drafts on you would be well received. I therefore must have been very surprised to receive that of the 19th, informing me that you had refused your acceptance. I was still more surprised on receiving from Mr Desprez the news that he had provided you with cover as early as the 16th of this month. I can therefore suppose nothing but an error on your part in notifying me of your refusal without at the same time returning the bills on Desprez for 49,818.01, which, being specifically intended to cover my drafts on you for his account, have become my property. I therefore ask you

I have received your letter of 23 September, Sir. That of the 16th has also reached me, and I shall attend to the collection of the bills enclosed here.
I take the keenest share in the distress which the event discussed in your letter of the 22nd of this month must have caused you. I most sincerely hope that the steps taken in this matter will meet with complete success, and urgently ask you to keep me informed of the results they [will have produced?].
I recognised your customary exactitude in your account of the provision you had made with Mr Fould [one word uncertain] for 49,818.01 francs, for my drafts made for your account.
But I must tell you that, following this communication,

I have reason to be extremely surprised that Mr B. L. Fould, who informed me on the 17th that my bills would be well received, did not, when notifying me of the contrary in his letter of the 19th, enclose with that letter the bills which you had remitted to him for me as early as the 16th of this month.
I therefore beg you most urgently, Sir, to take the necessary steps with Mr B. L. Fould to induce him to honour them without further delay.
I must also tell you that I have endorsed 12,450 francs of your notes to Messrs [Meunet?] and [Bret?] of Strasbourg, falling due on 23 October [following word uncertain], which will no doubt come back upon me without my having any recourse against my endorser, who is Mr [Vanlerbergh?] himself. I rely on your old friendship that, should circumstances prevent you from paying them, you will kindly indicate to me
the least costly means which I should employ to obtain reimbursement.
I must ask you to show the same benevolence to my friends Gontard of Frankfurt, who have endorsed them for a much larger sum.
Receive the assurance of my entire attachment.
