Letter opening and financial calculations - Paris, 2 May 1831

English translation

Paris, 2 May 1831.

I return the Bank’s schedules to you. I find the average maturities to be precisely 9 May for 10,103.90 and the 10th for 67,840. Consequently, you will write to him that, the 10th being approximately the average maturity of his remittances in customs drafts, for the sum of 77,943.90, I shall be able to settle them with him as early as the 11th in three-month drafts. There is therefore no reason not to settle this matter with him immediately in drafts due on 11 August. Consequently, I deduct from the 77,943.90 one-third franc per cent [short indication uncertain], 25,981.[00?] — 259.81. This leaves 77,684.09, which I remit to you in a draft on the Cash Office due on 11 August, for the sum of [blank], which, discounted at five per cent per annum [addition: 90 days], will give the above sum of 77,684.09. I ask him to acknowledge its receipt in full settlement of this transaction; however, you will not make this remittance until the 6th of the month.
Give me a statement of what has been entered in petty cash from 10 February to 30 April. Here is the statement of a settlement at [Chaulet’s?]. [Are we?] in agreement? Debit the Syndicate with the 18,000 francs just transacted by Mr [Fontenilles?], against a draft on my Cash Office as soon as possible, but which you will pay at sight if you can.
I received your letter of yesterday. I sent the [Rideau?] items back [to you?] yesterday in a separate packet dispatched by the Laffitte Caillard stagecoaches. I see the copy of the letter from my colleagues in Chartres; nevertheless, as it is good

Notes

Documentary annotation: [undeciphered mark at upper left]
The upper-left mark on P001 is not securely read.
The brief calculation notation after one-third per cent and the overwritten decimals of the intermediate figure remain locally uncertain. The principal, deduction and resulting balance are separately legible. The settlement statement retains its uncertain surname and short agreement formula. The word following pièces is provisionally read as Rideau.

Letter continuation, closing and postscript - 2 May 1831

English translation

if the bill is presented at your office, you will pay it subject to a discount of 6 per cent.
You will remit 12,200 to me, due on 27 August.
At what price does Mr [name uncertain] remit these sight bonds to you? I cannot reject them. But I shall warn him that he will not take them below 5 per cent. However, tomorrow you can tell him that the Treasury only allows you to remit them to it for your returns at 95 days from date, for it is evident that he remits at a certain maturity, so that you cannot pay him earlier. However, he may remit at 5 per cent those which will not be more than 95 days from date; but those with longer maturities, without exceeding 4 months, must bear a commission of one-quarter franc per cent or be discounted at 6 per cent.
A thousand kind regards.
 [paraph]

You have remitted nothing to me for the settlement. I shall probably be [short of funds?], but I thought I had asked you [to send?] enough short-dated bills. No matter, I shall provide for it.

Notes

The paraph is not securely identified.
The postscript concerns a shortage of funds and short-dated bills. The words provisionally read creux and envoyez are qualified in the transcription and translations.
