Letter with financial instructions - Paris, 10 April 1831

English translation

Paris, 10 April 1831.

I have received your letter of yesterday and the [ones that followed?]. The lost bill for [150 francs?] must be exchanged for another at the savings bank [as early as this evening?]; I am waiting for it so that I can send it to you.
I send you the bill for 16,000 francs to enter among bills in difficulty.
Here is a copy of the letter from [Quesney and N. Bachet?]. You will see whether, as I think and hope from this letter, I can refrain from [crossed-out word] notifying the protests to [Levavasseur?] and [Kleyser?] in Guadeloupe. I have no reason to fear any ill will from this firm, which moreover [entered?] the costs, etc.
You do not tell me with whom the 3,000-franc bill drawn on [Chauvin fils?] was payable on 8 April, and I do not remember.
Mr Clément’s account will be corrected through the next entries for the bills sent to the departments. I have heard of their [Jouin?] and [Créquennes?]; I imagine that the [crossed-out word] Rouen discount bank has been filled with them, but I shall be glad to know precisely how matters stand.
I return to you this letter to Mr [Demoliens?]. You would do better to send it directly, but under cover to [Clerc?] at Le Havre, and as a favour ask him to see to what is needed.
I cannot understand how this bill was lost. Have you made a claim at the post office? Fortunately it is only 69 francs. I do not know what the coppersmith’s 6[uncertain sign]50 relates to; it is payable all the same.
A thousand kind regards, goodbye.
[Paraph]

[Addition at lower left]
Please have cards sent to the widow Mrs [Perrin?] [timing unclear: Sunday].

Copy
Le Havre, 31 March 1831.

Sir,
We have learned from Mr J. [Olive?] that you remained the holder of two bills drawn by Messrs [Levavasseur?] and [Kleyser?] of Pointe-à-Pitre and accepted by us for:
16,000 francs, payable on 3 April next;
7000 francs, likewise, on the 12th of the same month;
to the order of Mr J. Giraud.
Temporarily deprived of the receipt of substantial capital owing to circumstances, it would be impossible for us to provide funds for these acceptances at their due dates. We therefore thought it our duty to ask you to consider our intention of satisfying you in principal and interest as soon as possible, so as to reduce, [as far as you can?], the expenses that nonpayment of such an acceptance would entail.
If you [crossed-out word] would even permit no expenses to be incurred, this letter will serve to exempt you from all judicial formalities.
We have the honour, etc.
Signed [Quesney and N. Bachet?].
