Letter with financial instructions - Paris, 5 April 1831

English translation

Paris, 5 April 1831.

Of the 158,981.72 on Paris which you handed me on 30 March, I have remitted 30,000 francs to Chaulet today and 128,981.72 to the Bank of France; debit it with this.
On the other hand, I have drawn on it the following orders, to the order of [Seyret?]:
on the 4th — 43,000 francs;
on the 5th — 60,000 francs;
on the 6th — 25,000 francs;
total 128,000. Make a note of it in advance.
Mr [Huet?], a legal representative, came to ask me to buy government annuities for him. He will have a letter for 90,000 francs presented to you, to be collected on the 15th. He says that this letter bears the signature of a well-known notary and that he himself is well known to be very sound. I therefore ask Mr [Jouffroy?] to make inquiries about him. If he finds either the man or his instrument good, it may be accepted as payment for the annuities to be purchased for him, subject to discount as usual. He would not wish to wait until the 15th, because he could fix the price at 75 francs or 75.10. I see no objection to it.
Debit your cash account with:
1300 francs for arrears on the 2600 francs of annuities which had been deposited on [Moreau?]’s account at the deposits office;
510 received from the theatre [company?].
Here is Mr Guiffard’s note, with a reply in the margin after conferring with Mr [Anquetil?].
Tell him that Mr Gauthier [Lagoyoin?] [crossed-out word] is pressing hard to take over his supplies. He says that he has been to Rouen and that my brother [from Paris?] told him that he would speak to me about him and urge me to use his services, and that Michaud was in financial difficulties there. I replied that I would wait before dropping the latter until I was certain that he was not taking a property [uncertain word]. In any case I would discuss it with Mr Guiffard, but I believed
[Line added at the foot:] that Michaud had already granted me all the reductions offered by Gauthier.

Notes

Documentary annotation: [Underlined mark at upper left]
The ordinary discount is retained in the 90,000-franc proposal. One word qualifying the property in the supply discussion and several names remain uncertain. The foot addition continues the final sentence.

English translation

Here is a circular which he handed me. You may communicate it to Mr Guiffard and Mr Mondary at the same time, but I believe that printing relating to the promises has already begun in Rouen.
Here is also Guiffard’s other note and the printed letter of the local receivers.
+ Was there not an entry this past January of 1,000 francs to the debit of my brother, the General, through the Syndicate’s credit?
I have received your letter of yesterday.
I see that Bourgeois and [Juinon?] will scarcely supply the late Bourgeois’s [recommended candidate?]. I shall attend to the replacement requested.
A thousand kind regards to [the little one?].
[Signature: Meurez?]

Notes

Documentary annotation: 1831
21 January: 1,000 francs, paid by the Syndicate on the 19th J. [abbreviation not expanded].
4 February: 1,500, likewise, on 6 January to Vassal [for/by?] Chaulet.
Credited on 10 February.
176 francs — handed over by Coligny to [V.?] Reiset;
980, likewise, to Mr Reiset at the end of March.
[Manuel?, underlined.]
The separate accounting annotation records payments and credits independently of the question in the letter. It contains a compressed date abbreviation and one compressed relationship marker. The references to papers do not establish a surviving enclosure in these scans.
