Letter with financial instructions - Paris, 4 April 1831

English translation

Paris, 4 April 1831.

Here is Chaulet’s account for the liquidation, with the schedule of [items?] of expenditure. It shows a balance of 41,425 in my favour. Check it; it appears correct to me. Chaulet has since paid an order drawn to the order of [Leroy?]: 308 for wood and 319 for fodder: 627. Balance: 40,798.
I paid for 16 Burgundy shares at 61 francs per share, less 52.11 for accrued interest, leaving 8.89 each: 142.24.
I received 20.74 each for 20 Four Canals shares, against 22.18 due: a net difference of 1.44 per share, or 28.80. Total of the two entries: 113.44. Balance: 40,684.56.
I handed him 30,000 in bills today. He owes me 70,684.56, plus the arrears on Madame [Lemonn…?]’s 6000 francs at 5%: 3000; and on 2,500 belonging to me and Mr [Lod…?]: 1250. Total: 74,934.56. Please enter this accordingly.
I have received your letter of yesterday. I have all the Syndicate’s letters. Here is the one of 18 March, with the schedule of 293,301.69 in securities allotted to me; you will send me a copy of the schedule. Credit the Syndicate with 172,762.50, a distributed dividend, debiting the syndicate liquidation, and 293,301.69, debiting an account to be opened for Securities Deposited with the Syndicate.
Here is its letter of 25 March relating to Haiti. Credit the Syndicate with 86,643.42, debiting Bills on Paris. I am not sending you the securities, because they are payable to bearer, but make the entries saying that three bearer Treasury notes were received from the Syndicate, dated 26 February, [series?] no. 1094 for [28,881?] francs for 1 September 1831. He will give me the portfolio number so that I can put it on these securities. Then he will put a note in the portfolio stating: Handed to Mr Reiset in Paris [in kind?].

Notes

Documentary annotation: [Marginal calculation: 16; 8.89; 144; 128; 142.24; some auxiliary figures uncertain]

Le Syndicat sera ensuite Crédité pr Valeurs en Dépôt au Syndicat de
[231,719.04?] pour les 254,517 [petit chiffre .104?] annuités d’Haïti portés par la Lettre;

The Syndicate will then be credited under Securities Deposited with the Syndicate with [231,719.04?], for the 254,517 [small figure .104?] in Haitian annuities stated in the letter; thus this entry will be made. Later I shall book the differences in the value of the bills as a loss.
Mr Bourgeois will give Demange 150 francs for his March salary; the remainder will be handed over provisionally. Tell Mondary that I have not been asked by the Commissioner for the Suppliers to submit a memorandum on my case, but I am sending him the agreement of 15 March 1830, [crossed-out line: the opinion of …], and the draft of Moreau junior’s reply. If he thinks he can find there the elements of a good defence in my favour, he may go and speak again to the Mayor, who presides over all the commissions.
I cannot find your copy of the deliberation. It is quicker to have it recopied for me than to have it searched for everywhere. A thousand kind regards to [the little one?]. [Paraph]
Do you know that Moreau fils [the elder?] shot himself in the head after heavy losses on the stock exchange? Where do I stand with him? Have you not sent [Loignon?] a bill for him?

Notes

The deposit figure and small subordinate numerical notation remain qualified. The postscript presents the news about Moreau as a question.
